What is SEO and where to start?3 min read

Search Engine Optimisation abbreviated as SEO is seen as a highly technical term. The first steps to SEO sound quite scary but behind the curtain lies the mechanism which is simple and logical.

SEO is the process through which your website is made relevant to search engines.

The process optimises your website as well as its contents in a way that it outperforms its rivals for being ranked at the top position of the Search Engine Results Page or SERPs (the first page you see when you search on Google, Yahoo, Bing or similar search engines).

Marketers and bloggers use SEO a lot. The purpose behind such an extensive use of search engine optimisation is to draw more and more traffic (visits) to a website. Increased traffic or visits to a website which can be transformed into potential leads (sales or clicks on your website).

Chris Kolmar from Zippia mentions that there are around 6 million blogs globally. Every day 6 million blogs are posted which sums up to more than 2.5 million blogs every year.

Your blog in such a haystack can get lost leading to the futility of all the effort put into content creation. So what’s the solution to it? Here, search engine optimisation comes into play. However, a planned approach to SEO can produce the desired results for which the first steps are essential.

First steps of SEO

What are the first steps in the SEO process for your website?

The first step to SEO varies. One might say that conducting keyword research is important while others would start with structuring their website or some might analyse their competitors in the first place. However, the basic structure of effective SEO begins with searching keywords.

With that being said, below is the summary of the first steps that you can use for optimising your website for search engines:

Keyword research to start your SEO journey

The soul and the heart of SEO. Keyword research grants you insight into your audience. Before I initiate anything I would first try to discover what my audience wants. A lack of keyword research will produce zero results. The article or the page won’t even be ranked at all. You can have deeper insights into keyword researching using tools like SEMrush, Google Analytics, Google Search Console and Ahrefs.

Crawlability and indexability is a crucial step of your SEO journey

Done with researching keywords? Now you need to make sure that search engines can crawl (recognise) your website. For this, you need to have the technicals at the right places. Search engines download the content from your websites using programs called crawlers. You are also required to ensure that your content is being indexed (search engines store your website data and information in its database) properly.

Content creation is your destination

Creating content which is valuable to your audience is the mantra to achieve your SEO goals. You need to understand what your audience wants and then build your content pillars on these requirements. Readability is the foundation of creating content. Therefore, you need to create digestible content.

Wrap up!

The wrap-up here is you need to have a thorough knowledge of your audience. You also needed to know the technicals and create content which is readable and human. These are the three pillars to improve your website ranking on search engine results pages and hone skills in SEO.
